Introduction

AMC President Jack P. Calareso signed the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment in 2007.  Since then, our campus has pledged to assist in creating a climate/carbon neutral environment, meet LEED standards or the equivalent in all new construction and renovation, and advocate for environmentally appropriate behaviors on campus and in the community.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability can be defined in general as "the use of the biophysical environment by humans in such a way that its productive functions remain indefinitely available." *   In other words:  leaving as little impact on the Earth as possible, as you conduct your daily life, so that future generations can similarly live and thrive.

Three key components are essential to building a sustainable future:

  • operating on renewable energy
  • creating a circular production economy in which the concept of "waste" is eliminated, and
  • living off of nature's income, not its capital.  **

The pages of this LibGuide offer sources of information and inspiration as we at Anna Maria College seek to reduce our carbon footprint and practice the stewardship of sustainability.

Watch our Progress!

Reduce - Reuse - Recycle

The College Sustainability Report Card is the only independent evaluation of campus and endowment sustainability activities at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. In contrast to the academic focus on sustainability in research and teaching, the Report Card examines colleges and universities, as institutions, through the lens of sustainability.
