Diversity & Inclusion: LGBTQIA+

Before We Were Trans illuminates the stories of people across the globe, from antiquity to the present, whose experiences of gender have defied binary categories. Blending historical analysis with sharp cultural criticism, trans historian and activist Kit Heyam offers a new, radically inclusive trans history, chronicling expressions of trans experience that are often overlooked, like gender-nonconforming fashion and wartime stage performance. Before We Were Trans transports us from Renaissance Venice to seventeenth-century Angola, from Edo Japan to early America, and looks to the past to uncover new horizons for possible trans futures.

Beyond the Gender Binary, Alok Vaid-Menon challenges the world to see gender not in black and white, but in full color. Taking from their own experiences as a gender-nonconforming artist, they show us that gender is a malleable and creative form of expression. The only limit is your imagination.

Part 1 of this first-of-its-kind 3-part series can help pediatric primary care providers can do much to combat stigma and discrimination for their LGBTQ patients. Signage and paperwork in clinics should reflect people of every race, disability, sexuality, and gender identity. Patients and caregivers should be screened for literacy, and educational resources should always be provided in locally relevant languages, because transgender children can be found in any ethnic and/or linguistic group. Additionally, the use of gender neutral, third person singular pronouns in publications can help to dissipate gendered assumptions. The incorporation of LGBTQ -friendly children's books into waiting room collections and avoidance of gender-segregated toy areas can also support developing brains and encourage children's self-expressions. As physicians empowered with LGBTQ health competency, we can break down the cycles of ignorance, shame, and toxic stress that harm children who identify as LGBTQ and improve their chances of leading happy, healthy adult lives.

Documenting the milestones in the fight for equality, Pride covers the victories of early activists, the gradual acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community in politics, sports, and the media and the landmark court cases that helped to ban discrimination, permit marriage, and help in the fight for equality.

Drawing on years of research, activism, and legal advocacy, Queer (In)Justice is a searing examination of queer experiences--as "suspects," defendants, prisoners, and survivors of crime. The authors unpack queer criminal archetypes--like "gleeful gay killers," "lethal lesbians," "disease spreaders," and "deceptive gender benders"--to illustrate the punishment of queer expression, regardless of whether a crime was ever committed. Tracing stories from the streets to the bench to behind prison bars, the authors prove that the policing of sex and gender both bolsters and reinforces racial and gender inequalities.

A vibrant celebration of early queer visibility on television, "Alternate Channels" explores breakthrough gay and lesbian characters of the 20th century while also looking at TV's first baby steps towards bi and trans inclusiveness. From the start of broadcasting to the year 2000, queer images progressed from invisibility to stereotypes; from stereotypes to milestones such as "Ellen," "Will & Grace," and "Tales of the City"; and from killer dykes on "Police Woman" to lesbian heroes on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."The book goes behind the scenes to see how the images came about, how queer organizers fought for better representation, and how all of that reflected the changing status of LGBT people in 20th-century America.

From identity politics and gender roles to privilege and exclusion, Queer explores how we came to view sex, gender and sexuality in the ways that we do; how these ideas get tangled up with our culture and our understanding of biology, psychology and sexology; and how these views have been disputed and challenged. Along the way we look at key landmarks which shift our perspective of what's 'normal'--Alfred Kinsey's view of sexuality as a spectrum, Judith Butler's view of gendered behavior as a performance, the play Wicked, or moments in Casino Royale when we're invited to view James Bond with the kind of desiring gaze usually directed at female bodies in mainstream media.

Self preservation. That's Bobby's motto for surviving his notoriously violent high school unscathed. Being out and queer would put an unavoidable target on his back, especially in a Filipino community that frowns on homosexuality. It's best to keep his head down, get good grades, and stay out of trouble. But when Bobby is unwillingly outed in a terrible way, he no longer has the luxury of being invisible. A vicious encounter has him scrambling for a new way to survive-by fighting back. Bobby is inspired by champion Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao to take up boxing and challenge his tormentor. But when Pacquiao publicly declares his stance against queer people, Bobby's faith in his hero and in himself is shaken to the core.

Felix Love has never been in love--and, yes, he's painfully aware of the irony. He desperately wants to know what it's like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him to find someone. What's worse is that, even though he is proud of his identity, Felix also secretly fears that he's one marginalization too many--Black, queer, and transgender--to ever get his own happily-ever-after. When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages--after publicly posting Felix's deadname alongside images of him before he transitioned--Felix comes up with a plan for revenge. What he didn't count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi-love triangle...

This is the funny, honest, messy, completely relatable story of Georgia, who doesn't understand why she can't crush and kiss and make out like her friends do. She's surrounded by the narrative that dating + sex = love. It's not until she gets to college that she discovers the A range of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum -- coming to understand herself as asexual/aromantic. Disrupting the narrative that she's been told since birth isn't easy -- there are many mistakes along the way to inviting people into a newly found articulation of an always-known part of your identity. But Georgia's determined to get her life right, with the help of (and despite the major drama of) her friends.

Alex Blackwood is really good at getting the girl she wants, but coming from a broken home with an alcoholic mother she finds commitment difficult, even when she thinks she is in love; impossibly awkward Molly Parker has a crush on the cool Cora Myers, but she does not know how to even start a conversation, much less make a connection; now they are all at college in Pittsburgh Alex decides to "help" Molly get the girl, while proving to her own flame that she is not just totally selfish--but things do not work out as the two have planned.
